Hurricane & Wind-Rated Garage Doors and Bracing in the Lake Charles Area
The garage door is usually the largest opening in a house. According to the LSU AgCenter, if it fails in high wind, pressure can build inside the house and contribute to wall or roof failure. Pressure-rated doors are designed to resist that bending and breaking.
Replace or reinforce?
- Replacement with a rated door: FEMA’s 2023 wind retrofit guide lists “garage doors rated for the design wind pressure” (and debris protection for doors with glass) in its Intermediate mitigation package.
- Reinforcing an existing door: Louisiana’s GOHSEP recommends that any decision to reinforce or replace a garage door be based on an inspection by a trained door systems technician, because added weight from reinforcement may require spring adjustment or replacement.
- Temporary braces: some braces are installed before a storm and block the door from opening until removed — ask about this if you need to be able to leave quickly.

FORTIFIED homes
The LSU AgCenter notes that the FORTIFIED Silver designation requires design-pressure-rated garage doors. If you’re pursuing FORTIFIED, ask your evaluator what documentation they need from the door installer.
